notes: this is Anria's ficlet on demand. whee! ^_^ incidentally, there is a scene in here that i've had in mind for ages.

"Frogs!" Kyo proclaimed too loudly for Yuki's taste. "Girl's like frogs, don't they?" He picked up a bright green, plastic frog from the shelf, his eyes too bright with hope.

Yuki rolled his eyes. "Oh, yes, frogs are all the rage..."

Kyo heard the sarcasm but chose to ignore it. "Willya hurry up already, damn it? We were supposed to meet her ten minutes ago!"

Yuki would have started to sweat if sweating were the sort of thing he could have permitted himself to do. He seized the first thing he saw. "This would be a good color for her, right?"

Kyo scrunched up his nose in an expression that Yuki would not admit was cute. "Nail varnish? Does she even wear makeup at all? Wouldn't that get all chipped and crap when she's working?"

Yuki scowled. "It's better than damn frog!"

Kyo turned red, and his whole body tensed. "Shut up! The frog is cool! You wish you had thought of the frog!"

It was amusing how damn easy Kyo was, although Yuki would deny thinking that two seconds after he thought it. "Riiiiight, I envy the frog. Yes. Absolutely."

"Damn it! Do you want to fight?!"

Yuki was spared answering, although he was not spared the embarrassment, when the young clerk came over to ask, far too politely, if they needed help.

They had gotten take out, and Kyo and Yuki hadn't even allowed Tohru to set the table. She seemed almost put off by that, but terribly pleased when they were pretending to get along. And she seemed pleased by her presents, even though they were only wrapped in the brown paper bags from the store. The frog still had the price tag on the bottom. And suddenly, a single bottle of nail varnish looked like a cheap gift.

And of course, Tohru had a tendency to look pleased with a root canal.

Kyo turned red. "It's Yuki's fault! He forgot your birthday! I mean, I forgot, too, but he should have remembered! Then you would have had at least one nice gift!"

Yuki scowled. He hated that damn cat sometimes. "Shut up, idiot! Why should I be the one to remember everything?"

"Er," Tohru tried to interject, looking almost ill with discomfort.

"Well, you're so damned perfect all the time, aren't you? So why wouldn't you remember her birthday? Isn't the damned prince supposed to remember shit like that?"

"Oh, so, what? You get a 'get out of jail free' card because you're an idiot?"

"Shut up!"

"Er!" Tohru waved her hands around in front of her, desperate to get their attention.

"That's it, I'm sick of you and your better than thou attitude, you stupid rat!"

"And what are you going to do about, idiot cat? Hiss at me?"

Tohru knew what was coming next, so she was forced to resort to the absolute, positive, utterly last resort. She raised her voice. "Excuse me!"

Silence. They stopped dead and turned to look at her.

She blushed. "Er, please don't fight! I do like my presents! The frog is really cute, and Kero Kero Keroppi was always my favorite Sanrio character! And I love this color. I can't wait for a chance to dress up and use it."

They sobered. Maybe they hadn't done so badly after all...?

She cleared her throat delicately. "But... You know... If you really felt like doing something extra special for me..." She blushed a deep, deep red, and they both leaned forward, waiting for her to finish. "Well... you see, and naturally, you can just refuse if you don't want to, but of course I can't hug either of you to thank you. So, if you wanted to make me really happy, you could... hug each other... for me."

Silence. They were like stone. She turned even brighter red.

They waited. They peeked at each other from the corner of their eyes. They panicked, and looked back at her, begging her silently to release them from this request.

She sighed nearly imperceptibly. "I'm sorry, you don't have to..."

"I don't mind!" Kyo burst out, hanging his head so they couldn't see his face. "If that damned rat doesn't mind."

"I don't mind," Yuki sighed, dismissive.

They remained motionless.

Tohru leaned forward, expectantly.

Kyo growled. "C'mon, let's get this over with!"

They moved to stand in front of each other, challenging each other with how close they got. They stared into each other's narrowed eyes. Kyo moved a step forward, and Yuki immediately mimicked the motion.

Kyo raised his arms. Yuki tried to not get in the way of Kyo's arms. It was an awkward dance, moving closer to each other, until finally, they were touching.

Tohru squeaked with glee, clapping silently with just her fingers.

Yuki sighed at the same time Kyo did, and they relaxed into the embrace. Actually, it wasn't so bad, now that they were doing it. Kyo was actually warm, and comforting. They fit together fairly well. It wasn't so bad at all.

Shigure passed by just then, holding a bowl of ice cream that he was already eating. He looked at them. "Get a room, you two."

They both turned bright red, jumped away from each other, and started stammering excuses and denials, but Shigure was already cheerfully walking away. Tohru jumped up, still glowing with pleasure. Her eyes were absolutely beaming, and as lovely as she always was, she was positively radiant now.

It made Yuki melancholy, being forced to realize how infrequently Tohru was actually this happy. And all he had to do was hug that damned cat.

"Thank you! Thank you both so much! Oh, I'm so pleased! I won't ever be able to tell you how happy this makes me! This is the best birthday since the year my mom made me that strawberry shortcake!"

Yuki sighed, totally defeated. Across the room, Kyo was wearing the same expression.

Tohru had no idea what power she had over them, but Yuki was afraid that one day, she would realize it. And then, she would realize that she didn't have to chose between them.

There was no way in the seven hells Yuki would ever admit that the idea didn't totally disgust him.
