notes: for my Bryan....

It was cold there. They were all still in their shorts. And it was loud. There were about ten million people running back and forth past the tennis team as if they weren't even there.

"Maybe we aren't sitting in the right waiting room. There's more than one. Someone should have directed us. I think the other waiting room has green carpet. I don't think anyone is going to tell us anything if we wait here."

Kamio was hungry, but he didn't want to say anything. He didn't want anyone to think he didn't care about the Captain. Of course he cared about the captain, but he had skipped lunch so he wouldn't get sick in the middle of the match...

"I don't know why no one will tell us anything. We should have heard something by now. They don't do surgery for something like this, I don't think. Maybe they had to amputate."

That smirking jackass from Rikkaidai would pay for this. He didn't understand how it had all happened... They'd just been crushed. And the Captain... It wasn't right. He'd done it on purpose! How could they win using such brutality?

"He may never play again. Not that it matters. If he can't play, there isn't much point to our going on at all. I hate all this sunshine. It's not hot enough to be this sunny. Maybe we should split up, and some of us go to the other waiting room. Logically, if we aren't sure which waiting room they will be coming to, it would make sense. There are enough of us to split up."

Kamio put his forehead on his fists, trying to burrow his way in to get rid of his headache. There was just too much pressure. The Captain's injury, and the noise, and the hunger, and the incessant monotone from hell that just wouldn't.... "Shinji! Shut up!"

Shinji blinked. "Sorry," he said softly, folding his arms over his chest and looking away.

Kamio sighed. He'd have to apologize for that later. And he would. But right now, all he wanted to do was put his head on Shinji's shoulder, close his eyes, and try to make it all go away.
